“DragX” is a quick & dirty hack that lets you drag text files into the windows of drag-savvy applications like they were text clippings. DragX requires Macintosh Easy Open (version 1.1 or newer) and, of course, Macintosh Drag And Drop, which is built in System 7.5.
• How does it work?
Technically, DragX is a translation extension, i.e., a component that registers itself at startup time with the Translation Manager (aka Macintosh Easy Open), offering to translate ‘hfs-flavored’ drags into styled text drags. So when you drag icons from the Finder into any window that can accept text drags, the window will highlight. Only when you drop the icon, though, can DragX check the actual file type, and it will fail if the icon isn’t a text file.
DragX does not patch any traps and uses very little memory.
• Known problems
The name “DragX” sucks. :) The icon is nice but a bit too generic.
Sometimes if you drag non text-files to applications that ordinarily accept only clippings, your mac will freeze. This problem seems to be due to some obscure bug in either the Drag Manager or the Translation Manager, and only seems to occur in pre-7.5 system software.
